Past Empires
The lost cities of the ancient world
In the footsteps of the Gods - Libya, Tunisia, Malta, Crete and Dubai
Join us on our quest for the past. In the Spring of 2008 we will set off on our tour to the ancient world. Evocative names from the past; Leptis Magna, Sabratha, Carthage, Tunis, Valetta, Knossos and Crete have long stirred the imagination of travellers and inquisitive minds. Colonised by Phoenicians and Greeks around the 7th century B.C., the region was later conquered by Rome. Today, the North African coast is home to a complex overlay of Mediterranean, African and Arabic cultural influences as well as a rich archaeological and historical legacy left by these ancient mariners. Our tour commences in the Libyan capital Tripoli and during our time here we will be overwhelmed by the impressive World Heritage UNESCO sites of Leptis Magna, Sabratha and Cyrene.
We travel onto Tunisia, stroll among the scattered ruins of Carthage and enjoy the Mediterranean delights of Tunis. Leaving North Africa we journey to Valletta, Malta’s capital and a World Heritage listed UNESCO site. Here, in this endlessly fascinating corner of the world our specialist local guides bring to life the past during our visits to Tarxion, Hypogeum and the famous Blue Grotto. Crete beckons as we reach Heraklion. We will tour the impressive palaces of Knossos and Phaestos left by the Minoan civilisation which developed on Crete around 4000 B.C. Our tour draws to and end as we reach Dubai, where we spend a fascinating two nights en-route back to Australia.
This tour has been especially created for our direct clientele, so do join us on this dynamic tour of ancient sites and colourful traditions which continue to attract adventurers to this day-all fascinated by the diverse civilisations that once flourished here.
