Mexico's Copper Canyon in the Sierra Madre Mountain Range, is the largest and deepest canyon in North America - four times the size of the United States' Grand Canyon. Travel by train the 644 kilometres from Chihuahua to Los Mochis, stopping en route. The railway is one of the 20th Century's greatest engineering feats, passing through 86 tunnels, and crossing 37 major bridges and trestles, some of which are nearly a mile above the canyon floor. The inhabitants of this area are the cave and cliff dwellers - the Tarahumara Indians, noted for their remarkable running abilities.

Day 1

Chihuahua

Arrive Chihuahua. Afternoon at leisure to explore the city's colonial buildings. The local hairless small dog, named after the town, has a body temperature of 40°C - the world's only authentic 'hot dog'!

Day 2

Chihuahua - Creel

Begin your unforgettable train journey into the wilderness of Mexico's Copper Canyon. Afternoon arrival in Creel. Afternoon tour to Lake Arereco - to see the Tarahumara Indians, who still maintain their traditional way of life. 'Tarahumara' means 'foot runner' and these Indians are as agile and full of endurance as any modern day marathon runner. They have been known to run down wild deer and turkeys on foot.B

Day 3

Creel - Divisadero

Continue your train journey to Divisadero, just a short stroll to the rim of the awesome Copper Canyon (Barrancas del Cobre) This is undoubtedly the best view point of the journey. Deep in the canyon are orange, banana and avocado trees and jungles inhabited by pumas and parrots. Perhaps explore the area on foot or horseback. BLD

Day 4

Divisadero - Bahuichivo - Cerrocahui

Morning free to explore. Reboard your train for the mission village of Bahuichivo where you will disembark and transfer to your hotel in Cerrocahui. BLD

Day 5

Cerrocahui

Excursion to the beautiful Urique Canyon. The Urique River actually carved the Copper Canyon, many years ago. BLD

Day 6

Cerrocahui - Los Mochis

Reboard the train for the final leg of your spectaular journey, to the fishing resort of Los Mochis, weaving through mountains and tunnels and over many bridges. Often referred to as the 'Salad Bowl of Mexico', Los Mochis is Mexico's largest agricultural centre. B

Day 7

Los Mochis

Morning at leisure. We suggest you take a cruise of the popular Topolobampo Bay. Depart Los Mochis. B
