Amman – Jerash – Ajloun – Amman
Breakfast then transfer to Jerash. Some of the greatest Greco-Roman ruins around. Reaching its zenith as a favourite of the emperor Hadrian, it has a striking collection of archways and theatres, baths, public buildings and colonnaded streets. Onto Ajloun Castle or Qalaat Errabadh (Arabic for “Hilltop Castle”). It looks like a Crusader fortress, but it was built by Muslims in 1184-85 as a military fort and buffer to protect the region from invading Crusader forces. Return to Amman. Overnight Geneva Amman Hotel.
Amman – Madaba – Mt Nebo – Kerak – Petra
Breakfast, check-out and drive to Mt. Nebo where Moses is believed to be buried. In the same area in Madaba is St. George’s Church that houses the oldest mosaic map of old Jerusalem. Transfer to Kerak. The castle is some 220m long, 125m wide at the north end, and 40m wide at the southern end where a narrow valley deepened by a ditch separates it from the adjoining and much higher hill – once Saladin’s favourite artillery position. In the afternoon we continue in to Petra. Overnight Petra Moon Hotel.
Petra is justifiably on most people’s list of ‘must-visit’ places. It is the jewel of Jordan, the lost city of the biblical Nabataean, an impressive series of tombs and dwellings hidden behind ornate facades carved directly into the rock. Dating back to the 6th century BC, the site was lost to Western minds until it was rediscovered in 1812 by a Swiss explorer. We spend a day wandering around the magnificent ruins, there is much to see and the area is vast and impressive.
Petra – Wadi Rum
Following breakfast we transfer to the Wadi Rum, where black and wind scalped hills stand like foreboding sentinels upon the pale sands, it is often described as the “Valley of the Moon”. Here we take a 2 hour 4WD excursion into the desert where the Bedouin have lived since ancient times. This is a stupendous, timeless place, virtually untouched by humanity. Here, it is the weather and winds that have carved the imposing, towering skyscrapers, so elegantly described by T.E. Lawrence as “vast, echoing and God-like…”. Overnight luxury camp.
Wadi Rum – Dead Sea
After breakfast transfer to the Dead Sea. At over 400m below sea level, the Dead Sea is the lowest point on the face of the earth, and is flanked by mountains to the east and the rolling hills of Jerusalem to the west, giving it an almost other-worldly beauty. Although sparsely populated and serenely quiet now, the area is believed to have been home to five Biblical cities: Sodom, Gomorrah, Adman, Zebouin and Zoar (Bela). We may take a swim in the salty waters or just relax by the seaside. Overnight Sea Spa Hotel.
Dead Sea to Amman
After breakfast we return to Amman International Airport for onward arrangements. B
