This spectacular island National Park is situated just off the East coast of Tasmania. It’s tranquility combined with its natural beauty, rare wildlife and fascinating history makes it a unique and special place. And on this award winning, 4 day gentle walk, you’ll experience all of it.

Maria Island’s pristine untouched beaches, the crystal clear waters of the surrounding Marine Reserve and scenery like the magnificent Mt Maria and Bishop and Clerk peaks will take your breath away. You’ll wander through forests of magnificent blue and white gums, some of them over 400 years old and unique to Maria Island.

It’s difficult to describe the beauty of Maria Island, you really have to see it to believe it.

Day 1

Hobart – Mercury Passage – Shoal Bay

‘The first steps… – You arrive at the historic coastal town of Triabunna. Our boat will take you through the sparkling waters of Mercury Passage to the isthmus of Maria Island. You will set foot on a pristine, untouched beach, exactly as explorers did years earlier. Here you enjoy lunch overlooking the crystal azure waters of Shoal Bay before taking a walk to the tranquil Casuarina Beach camp. That afternoon explore the trail through the tall eucalypt forest down to the spectacular Haunted Bay. That evening, after a fine gourmet dinner, stroll along the beach at sunset with a glass of wine, delighting in the day you’ve had and excited by what lies ahead. (Distance 8 kms).

Day 2

Riedle Bay – Point Lesueur – Bloodstone Point

‘Five fabulous beaches. – Wake up to the busy chattering of the wattle birds and, from the comfort of your bed, watch the morning sun sparkle through the forest. After a delicious breakfast, it’s time to start your journey along five beautiful beaches. Watch dolphins play in the surf and sea eagles soaring overhead as you walk past the carpet of exotic shells lining the water’s edge. By late afternoon you arrive at White Gums camp for a refreshing swim. After the perfect day, you can relax with your fellow walkers, before enjoying a candlelit dinner of the finest Tasmanian food and wine. Can it get any better than this? (Distance 13 kms).

Day 3

Hopgrounds Beach – Mt. Maria

‘Into the heart, up to the heights. – Today you head inland to the heart of the Island and discover the rich greens of the grand forests. You’ll wander through the planet’s largest stand of giant Tasmanian blue gums and can choose to climb the peaks of Mt Maria or Bishop and Clerk. It’s a 700metres climb through rare “cloud” rainforests. As you can imagine, the views are simply breathtaking. That evening you arrive at the fascinating world heritage settlement of Darlington where you’ll stay at the elegant colonial Bernacchi House and enjoy a final night banquet with fine wine and conversation. Another day that’s given you plenty to dream about. (Distance 9-17 kms).

Day 4

Darlington – Hobart

‘The fabulous Top End. – The final day begins with a delicious breakfast followed by a walk around the northern tip of Maria Island. The walk takes you through a variety of spectacular woodlands and forests with rare endemic birds, wallabies and wombats on show. You continue on to the dramatic sea cliffs of Fossil Bay and then head down to the remarkable fossils at Fossil Cliffs. Arriving back at Darlington we enjoy a celebratory farewell lunch before boarding the boat to go back to the mainland and Hobart taking with you incredible memories and stories of an amazing four days spent in a very special place. Memories, stories and new friends that will last a lifetime. (Distance 4 kms)

Please note that this itinerary is intended as a guide only and changes may be made due to weather or other circumstances beyond our control. 

Minors: Clients to be 12 years or older unless by prior approval. No child discount is provided. 

Dietary: Vegetarians and special diets are catered for. Please ensure any special requirements are noted on the booking form. 

Health: Trips cater for clients who can walk 10-15 km a day carrying light daypacks of 6-8kg. Participants over 70 require a medical certificate. 

Pick Up/Drop Off: The guests will be picked up from their Hobart hotel between 7:30 – 8:00am on Day 1 and brought to our head office for orientation and gear issue. Guests will have time to re-pack their bags and luggage storage is provided for the duration of the walk. 

On day 4 guests will be returned to their Hobart accommodation at approximately 5:00pm. A departure airport transfer can be provided; please do not book a flight departing earlier than 6pm. 

Hotel pick up/drop off is available for Hobart CBD accommodation. Pick up in other areas may be available upon request. If guests are not staying in the Hobart CBD they will need to make their own way to our office at 4 Patrick St, Hobart. 

Accommodation: 

The first two nights are spent in comfortable, permanent wilderness camps behind our own remote, private beaches. Guests enjoy elegant twin share cabins with polished wooden floors and beds mattresses, pillows and fresh sleeping bags. The sleeping huts are connected with boardwalks to the large main dining cabin. 

The camps are environmentally sensitive and architecturally attractive. The solar-powered, composting toilets are well maintained, pleasant and hygienic. Rainwater is collected on site for camp use. There are bush showers with warm water in the camps and there is a private wash room. Please note there is no power at the wilderness camps. 

The last night is spent in the historic, colonial Bernacchi House. Here guests enjoy hot showers. 

Gear: 

It is important that guests are aware that they carry a light backpack (between 6-8kg) with their own personal items (however guests can arrange a “special baggage transfer walk” option of they require. Packs, waterproof jackets, silk sleeping sheets, head torches and sleeping bags are supplied (we do not carry the sleeping bags as they are stored at each camp). Guests should have their own walking boots, well worn in with good ankle support and tread. Light day packs are also available for use on side trips from Camp 1 and Bernacchi House. A gear list will be provided at the time of booking. 

Pack Free Walk: We transport our guest’s packs between each night’s accommodations on the walk. Guests will only need to carry a small day pack with their water bottle, rain jacket and lunch box. Please note, this service is only available on selected dates and for private group walks and must be requested at time of booking. The porter costs an additional $200 per person

How to Book

Balance due: 75 days prior to departure
If booking within 74 days of departure: Full payment must be made.

Reservations are established when you receive written confirmation and acceptance of the deposit and Booking Form. Travel insurance is strongly recommended at the time of booking.

Cancellations

Cancellations must be advised in writing to Adventure Associates. Cancellation charges are subject to regulations of airlines, coach and tour operators, hotels and other principals involved. If it is necessary to cancel your arrangements, the following non-refundable charges will apply.

If the cancellation charge is more than your advance payment you remain liable for the difference. For these and other reasons mentioned above you are strongly recommended to take out Travel Insurance. Once the Land Tour has departed there will be no refund for any unused portions of the trip.
